Read FAST FENG SHUI on your KINDLE! |
| |
I'm pleased to announce that both Fast Feng Shui and Clutter Clearing from the Inside Out are now available in Kindle format at the Amazon.com Kindle Store: here (FFS) and here (CCIO). Both titles have been revised and updated for these new editions. With so many Kindle apps now available for computers, smart phones, and other devices, you don't need a Kindle to read them. Even better, the Kindle editions are priced at a very attractive $9.99, a nice savings off the PDF and paper editions. Fast Feng Shui for Prosperity will be our next Kindle title, with the FFS Home Office and FFS Singles books to follow. As is usual around here, I'm refraining from stating advance pub dates, as I always think I can get a month's worth of tasks done in a week (or sooner!), even though I know better. Best guess for FFS Prosperity Kindle release is sometime early next year (2011), with the others to follow as we get to them. Since announcing the Kindle editions to my email subscribers, I've had a few requests from readers for a paper edition of "Clutter-Clearing from the Inside Out" (currently available in PDF and Kindle formats only). I do have plans to offer a paper edition as a "print on demand" title, although that's still a future project. However, since I know some of you are waiting for it, I've bumped it higher on the priority list, and will keep you posted when and where that's available. I've been a Kindle owner for just over a year now, and love, love, love this technology. Now, if someone would just figure out this cloning business so I could have two (or more) of me to shepherd these and other projects through the pipeline, I could maybe get that month's worth of work done before breakfast. In the meantime, it's hard to produce at top speed with this kind of thing going on:
This is Cosmo.
He's now six months old, and has been sprawling across my computer keyboard and playing rowsing games of wastebasket carousel since Labor day weekend, when he poked his head up from the grass in front of a banana patch on our regular afternoon-walk route and followed us home. He was thin and hungry (and much smaller: he's tripled his body weight in two months) and impossible to resist. I am very happy to have a cat again; even when he's being a pest he is a delightful addition to the chi of our home.Labels: Clutter book for Kindle, Fast Feng Shui for Kindle

feng shui fountain in bedroom |
| |
Q: The wealth area of our home is the Master Bedroom. We currently have a tabletop water fountain in the back left corner of the room, as well as some other objects like photos of our dream house and garden, chinese coins, and amethyst crystals. I have recently read on the internet that water features should not be in the Master bedroom even if it is the wealth area. Is this true?
A: Yes, it’s correct that a water fountain is not advised for the bedroom. Water brings excessive yin energy into this already- yin space. Wood energy is an excellent addition to the wealth area, so for the bedroom, instead of a fountain, I’d recommend some kind of plant or tree, such as a live orchid, or a jade plant. You could also use a representation of a tree, such as the wire-and-gemstone-chip ones some FS retailers sell. Here's an image I grabbed off the web. This one is styled as a miniature bonsai: You can move the water fountain to the career area, or to a position near the entry. If the water flow is predominantly in one direction, try to place the fountain so that the water flows toward the center of the home, rather than toward the doorway.
The wealth area is a wonderful location for the Master Bedroom; I hope it brings you much happiness and good fortune.

The Ba Gua of a Room |
| |
Q: I have read many things on placement of the bagua over a room, but I still am confused what to do. When I look into my bedroom or living room, from the door to each room, I see a wall. I must turn to the left in both situations to be able to fully look into the space. Should I turn to the left and place the bagua from that point with north being close to me? Or do I have to line it up with the edge of the wall that the door is on and face the wall instead of looking into the space??
A: The ba gua always starts at the door, so in your case from the doorway it will extend to the left the width of the room, and forward to the far wall of the room:
The doorway will be in the lower right corner of the ba gua (helpful friends). You can see in the diagram that because of the room layout both the Relationships and Creativity/Children areas of this room are reduced in size. You may wish to strengthen these two guas with remedies either within this room, or in other Relationship and Creativity/Children locations elsewhere in the home.
BTW: North is only relevant if you are using the compass directions. It does not affect the doorway placement method.
Have fun feng shui-ing these rooms. Stephanie R.

Children vs. Career confusion |
| |
I received a question not long ago from a gentleman wishing to assist his daughter in finding a new job. The planned feng shui improvements to the family home, on which he wanted feedback, were focused on the children and creativity area.
This alerted me to a misconception that perhaps others have made as well. Yes, the "children and creativity" area is associated with the children of the home (or, in a business context, with the employees). This man was thinking my daughter needs help, so he looked to the children area of his home to see what could be done.
And that's where the misunderstanding lay. The person who needs a new job is the daughter. I don't know for sure what's going on in her mind, but if Dad's right that the priority is finding employment, probably she's focused on I need a job, not I want to have a baby. From her perspective the issue is purely a CAREER one.
When someone in the household has employment issues, look to the CAREER area first, even if that someone is your child. Any feng shui issue must be addressed from the point of view of the core stakeholder. Look to the CHILDREN area of the ba gua if you would like to conceive a child, or if there are difficulties in your relationship with a child. When your child has an issue of his or her own, turn to the area of the ba gua associated with that specific issue.
Another issue here is that it's not a good idea to apply feng shui on someone else's behalf if that person is old enough to act for herself. If this daughter wishes to participate in making some feng shui changes to the home that may assist her in finding a good job, great. But if she's not interested, her own energy and enthusiasm will be lacking, and any feng shui strategies her well-intentioned dad might make on her behalf will be under-powered.Labels: career, children, family, Feng Shui Q+A

Powerful New Moon coming up |
| |
Hi everyone, I want to alert you all to a powerful new moon coming up on Monday, March 15th. Every new moon is a time of new beginnings, and this one is an especially good time for inspiration and new directions that can lead to great things.
According to the (western*) astrology newsletters I read, this new moon is unique because the Sun, Moon, Mercury, and Uranus are all very close together in a tight pattern that supports inspiration, new ideas, greater insight and intuition through alignment with higher consciousness, and breakthrough problem-solving and decision-making. All of that also means this is a good time to choose to move beyond any old emotional patterns that are no longer serving you.
“If you’re ready to do something different, then this New Moon on the Ides of March is a time to set some intention." -- Madeline C. Gerwick
"The creative impulse that is borne out of this New Moon is powerful and intelligent in its impact, and can be harnessed for great things. ... This New Moon is definitely worth planning for due to the inspiration that is unlocked here. This is not so much time for collaboration as it is for initiating new ideas and new inner awakenings." -- Lynn Hayes
This weekend into Monday is a good time to reflect on what new directions you’d like to take over the next few months. I especially recommend doing this if it’s been more than a few months since you’ve done any new feng shui in your space. Revisit the ba gua, and think about (and/or meditate on) which areas represent the changes you’d most like to see over the next few months. Since “thinking about” implies a logical, left-brain approach, be sure also to allow your intuition space to speak up. It might point you in a new direction you haven’t yet considered. If you’ve been focused on one particular aspect of life for a while (relationships, or prosperity, for example), be sure to remain open to looking in a different direction at this time. You don’t have to set those relationship or financial ambitions aside, but do be open to an intuitive nudge that points you in a new direction. The energy of this new moon is about changing your focus in some way; you have the opportunity now to do that deliberately and with strong intention, rather than waiting for something to surprise you down the road.
Be sure to focus on the positive OUTCOME you desire, not on any specific problem or challenge you want to overcome.
Once you’ve clarified a strong new moon intention, write it on a piece of paper, and place it in the relevant gua within your home or office. Or, use this new moon ritual to choose the gua most appropriate for you.
For this new moon, I’ll be focusing on the steps my husband and I are taking to move our online businesses both forward and in some cases in new directions over the next few months. (Lots going on behind the scenes the past few months, one reason I haven't been posting here.)
This will be the first spring in quite a few years that we are not moving, or having family come to visit, or going on a trip ourselves. Being able to stay home and focus on taking our planned “inspired actions” for our business feels like a luxury.
What “new beginnings” will you focus on for this powerful new moon?
Aloha,
Stephanie
PS: Don't worry, this isn't turning into an astrology blog! I'll be back with more feng shui Q+A and other topics and news when my current projects are a little further along.
* I've nothing against the Chinese astrology that many feng shui professionals incorporate into their practice, but have been following/using western astrology since long before I got into feng shui. It works for me, and I'm sticking with it. Please note that I am not an astrologer, and do not offer interpretations or forecasts; I'm simply passing on to you information that I find interesting and useful. A new look at combining western astrology and feng shui |
| |
Those of you who have been following my feng shui writing for a while will know that I am a big fan of western astrology. I mean no disrespect to the Chinese system, it's just that I've been using western astrology in my personal life for about thirty years now and it works for me and I'm sticking with it.
I've often wondered how western astrology could be more deeply coordinated with the western style of feng shui that I practice and write about. But, although I'm a highly experienced consultee, I am not a professional astrologer and simply don't have the depth or breadth of expert knowledge to have explored that question on my own.
Which is why I was so thrilled to read this excellent article today that matches up the Houses of a person's natal astrological chart with the ba gua, and discusses how to use this information along with new moon cycles for very powerful and effective feng shui rituals and/or remedy placement.
This is exciting new information, and I'm thrilled to have found it just in time to do some feng shui empowerment on the New Moon happening tomorrow, Oct. 17. (It's a bit last-minute to be sharing this info with you here, but if you miss the October new moon, just start planning ahead for next month.)
The Oct. '09 new moon lands in the 9th house of my chart, which correlates to the "Knowledge/Wisdom" area -- which in my home is to be where my office is located. As soon as I've finished this post I'm going to start preparing for the new moon by cleaning up my desk!
Do be aware that to use this method you will need: 1) a basic familiarity with western astrology and its symbols. 2) a copy of your "birth" or "natal" chart that defines the exact location (in degrees and minutes within a sign) of each house cusp.
Then, keep an eye on upcoming new moons. Look up the date and time (adjusted for your local time zone), and where that moon will be in what astrolocial sign. Here's an example of an ephemeris (astrological calendar) page for November '09. I've enlarged the box that shows the lunar phases:
(most of the info on this page can be ignored if all you want to know is when/where the new moon is happening)
The Nov. '09 new moon (marked in red) happens on the 16th at 24 degrees 34 minutes Scorpio. What house is that in in your chart? Remember to adjust the time of the new moon for your local time zone.
If you don't know enough about western astrology to work this out on your own, Simone Butler (author of the article) can prepare personalized info for you ... or you can invest some time in reading up on the basics of western astrology. There's a TON of information available on the web to get you started, including this overview. (Please do NOT email me with astrology questions, BTW: I will just send you back to this page to read this paragraph again.)
